It would be unfit to limit Joung Tae-choon and Park Eun-ohk as only folk musicians,
for as shining examples of active members of society, this is a pair of musicians, poets,
revolutionaries and citizens who endlessly relive the days of military dictatorship and pariah
capitalism. Forty years since his debut, through regularly attending democratic protests
and rejecting commercial broadcasting activity, Joung Tae-choon has continued to adhere
to his self-imposed rule, “Misfit or idealist. Anyway a die-hard,” fulfilling his own commitment
as a man of principle. From the album Poet’s Village, considered a masterpiece of
Korean lyricism, to <92 The Rainy Spell, in Jongno>, a tool of social struggle that threw light
on reality, there are myriad reasons for inviting Joung Tae-choon and Park Eun-ohk
to the DMZ Peace Train Music Festival. Above all, the biggest reason is the inspiration
they have given the Korean art world through their leadership in the struggle against
the album pre-censorship system.
